Writings on writers

2018-10-17

I haven't been writing much lately because I've rediscovered the writings of so many great people.  So, instead of writing, I've been reading. In case you're interested here are some authors whose books are worth reading:

  • Maya Angelou (Maya is not just an author extraordinaire, playwright, poet and civil rights activist, but her own life story is enough to speak to you. She died in 2014.)
  • Louis de Bernieres (Captain Corelli's Mandolin is such sensitive, wonder filled literature, although I had to re-write the ending in my mind. He made Corelli a bit too vacillating for my likes.)
  • Jack London (London was a prolific writer in his lifetime. I still vividly remember his book 'The Call of the Wild' from my childhood.)
  • George Eliot (George by the way was a woman named Mary Ann Evans. She wrote nearly 200 years ago and it was at that time very difficult for women to get their works published, and then they weren't taken seriously. Her book 'Daniel Deronda' is an excellent character study.)
  • John Grisham (Grisham is able to build a story about legal issues and crime and have you wondering all the way through the book how on earth the ending is going to be truly just - but it always is.)
  • Zane Grey (Grey was a dentist who wrote books in his free time. He wrote about the American west and one of my favourite characters in his books was Lassiter.)
